Silent Praise
One warm evening, as the summer sun lingered above 80 degrees, I went for a walk around the neighborhood. The chorus of cicadas filled the air as I greeted neighbors along the way. Suddenly, something caught my eye.
Among the lush green trees, a maple tree had begun to show a hint of red in its leaves.
“Already? Could it be autumn?” I exclaimed without thinking.
In the busyness of the first half of 2025, I had not noticed that the trees had been quietly doing their work all along. They were faithfully following the rhythm of creation and were slowly clothing themselves in the colors of fall.
It is said that autumn leaves are most brilliant when there is a wide difference between daytime and nighttime temperatures. Scientifically, the greater the temperature swings, the more sugars build up in the leaves, which then transform into anthocyanin pigments that create vivid shades of red. The sharper the contrast between day and night, the more vibrant the colors become. How marvelous and intricate is the handiwork of God, who designed such a precise and beautiful order in nature.
Meanwhile, I often find myself complaining, saying it is too hot one moment and too cold the next, as I wrestle with the weather changes. Yet the trees make no complaint. They simply change their colors in silence, offering their beauty as praise to the Lord.
I was deeply moved by this quiet testimony. The trees do exactly what they were created to do. By yielding to the Creator’s order, they declare His glory. Their beauty invites us to pause, to marvel, and even to journey in search of autumn’s splendor.

This is the silent struggle of the trees, a hymn without words.
This small realization stirred a big question in my heart. With what do I praise the majesty of the Lord? Can I, like the tree, without words, remain faithful in the place where I am and let my life itself declare the glory of God?
As the seasons change, may the steadfast witness of the trees remind us of our calling to glorify God faithfully and joyfully wherever He has placed us.
“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge.
They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them.
Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.” (Psalm 19:1–4)
